We are pretty sure Steve Forbes carries at least seven business cards. We use him as our example of “you’re never too famous to carry business cards”. People make all kinds of excuses why they don’t give out their business card, but our two not-so-favorite excuses are: “I ask them for their card, only if I am interested in them.” Or, “Everyone knows me.” The former is just kind of obnoxious — “If I think you have value to me, then I will deem to give you my card.” Wrong attitude.
And the latter excuse, “Everyone knows me.” Really? The temptation is to respond by saying, “That’s interesting, but guys like Steve Forbes, who have a magazine of the same name and who have run for President of the United States…well, he can give out his card. Why not you, dude?”
If you don’t feel you need to give out your card, get over it. It’s just a business social grace, it’s not meant to be some heavy-handed sales tool. As Tom Peters will tell you, “It’s just a name card.”
