We often don’t realize the impact our words have on one and other. What’s particularly heartwarming is the staying power of kind words.
We were teaching the skills of networking to a large multinational in Houston and sitting in the middle of the room was a guy named John. John did not look particularly happy to be there and was not engaged during the discussions. At one point during the session we were having a conversation about the power of Toastmasters to help a person overcome their fear of public speaking and it became known that there was an active Toastmasters club inside this organization. A young woman sitting at the front of the room turned around and said to John, “Remember when you sent me that email telling me that the speech I just gave at Toastmasters was really great, well I haven’t forgot that. It was so kind and really made a difference for me because I was so nervous.”
John looked perplexed. She reminded him that it happened about “five years ago”. His face just beamed. So, she did something nice for him and we bet he’ll remember that story five years later as well.
John was an engaged, happy camper for the rest of the day.
